Georges Hair Designs is supporting a local organization by donating hair. We believe this is a great cause not only because they are making free wigs for people in need, but also are teaching students how to make them. We have already sent out a box of donated hair and will be continuing to take donations. They accept any length, color, or texture of hair.

The University of North Carolina School of the Arts has a Wig and Makeup Department that is making history. They have teamed up with Novant Health (Forsyth Medical Center) to make customized wigs, free of charge, for the patients with hair loss. Beginning the Medical Wig Projects, this program was inspired by students and led by Christal Schanes, the associate professor with the School of Design and Production. These wigs have been in high demand for cancer patients and have been unaffordable for some, until now.

The students are hand making these customized wigs from human hair. The hair is first sanitized and ventilated before customizing begins. One wig can require between 80 – 125 hours of manual labor. They hand tie an estimated 100,000 knots that pull the wig together. They can be washed and styled specially for the client’s head.

Currently, they are in the process of opening a UNCSA affiliated medical wig business called MEDwig in the summer of 2018. It is a nonprofit that provides 3 free medical wigs each month for qualifying clients.

If you are looking for a place to donate your hair while in Greenville, NC, come to Georges Hair Designs to help us support this great cause!
